Psalm 98

A psalm.

¹Sing to the Lord^(A) a new song,^(B)
    for he has done marvelous things;^(C)
his right hand^(D) and his holy arm^(E)
    have worked salvation^(F) for him.
²The Lord has made his salvation known^(G)
    and revealed his righteousness^(H) to the nations.^(I)
³He has remembered^(J) his love
    and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth^(K) have seen
    the salvation of our God.^(L)

⁴Shout for joy^(M) to the Lord, all the earth,
    burst into jubilant song with music;
⁵make music to the Lord with the harp,^(N)
    with the harp and the sound of singing,^(O)
⁶with trumpets^(P) and the blast of the ram’s horn^(Q)—
    shout for joy^(R) before the Lord, the King.^(S)

⁷Let the sea^(T) resound, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it.^(U)
⁸Let the rivers clap their hands,^(V)
    let the mountains^(W) sing together for joy;
⁹let them sing before the Lord,
    for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
    and the peoples with equity.^(X)

Haggai 2:10-19

New International Version

Blessings for a Defiled People

¹⁰On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month,^(A) in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai: ¹¹“This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests^(B) what the law says: ¹²If someone carries consecrated meat^(C) in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?^(D)’”

The priests answered, “No.”

¹³Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?”

“Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.^(E)”

¹⁴Then Haggai said, “‘So it is with this people^(F) and this nation in my sight,’ declares the Lord. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer^(G) there is defiled.

¹⁵“‘Now give careful thought^(H) to this from this day on^[a]—consider how things were before one stone was laid^(I) on another in the Lord’s temple.^(J) ¹⁶When anyone came to a heap^(K) of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat^(L) to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.^(M) ¹⁷I struck all the work of your hands^(N) with blight,^(O) mildew and hail,^(P) yet you did not return^(Q) to me,’ declares the Lord.^(R) ¹⁸‘From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought^(S) to the day when the foundation^(T) of the Lord’s temple was laid. Give careful thought: ¹⁹Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate^(U) and the olive tree have not borne fruit.^(V)

“‘From this day on I will bless^(W) you.’”

¹⁶For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,^(A) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.^(B) ¹⁷He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”^[a]^(C) ¹⁸We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.^(D)

¹⁹We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,^(E) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light^(F) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns^(G) and the morning star^(H) rises in your hearts.^(I) ²⁰Above all, you must understand^(J) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. ²¹For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God^(K) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.^(L)
